The Neotropical Ornithological Congress (NOC) is held every four years by the Neotropical Ornithological Society (NOS) in rotating countries of Latin- and North America. Its purpose is to support research and conservation of Neotropical birds and to contribute to the building of local ornithological capabilities in hosting countries. On this occasion, the VIII NOC will be held in Maturín, Venezuela, from May 13 – 19, 2007, and will be organized jointly by the NOS and the Unión Venezolana de Ornitólogos (UVO). This Congress will honor the memory of William H. Phelps and William H. Phelps Jr., noted pioneers of Venezuelan Ornithology.

The conference will feature a diverse scientific program that will include lectures by invited speakers, symposia, round-table discussions, workshops, short oral presentations and posters. Students and amateur ornithologists are welcome The Congress will also include a social program and a midweek field trip. The official languages of the Congress are Spanish and English and simultaneous translations will be available.

The local organizing committee has chosen Maturín, in Northeastern Venezuela because of the rich avifauna, diversity of vegetation types, and contrasting landscapes of the region. Within reasonable driving distance of the city you can access the famous Caripe Oilbird Cave, unique riparian habitat, the huge estuary of the Orinoco Delta, the Caribbean coastline, or montane forests. Pre- and post-congress tours will also be available.

We look forward to your participation.
